The Montessori Difference

At Koru Montessori, we follow the educational philosophy developed by Dr. Maria Montessori (1870–1952), an Italian physician and educator whose pioneering work continues to shape early childhood education around the world.

Through her observations, Montessori discovered that young children learn best when they are free to concentrate, engage, and explore purposeful activity. From birth, children have an absorbent mind, allowing them to effortlessly take in knowledge through their senses and experiences. She also identified sensitive periods, windows of time during which children are especially receptive to learning specific skills, such as language, movement, order, or coordination.

A Prepared Environment for Natural Learning

Montessori education provides experiences that support the absorbent mind and sensitive periods through a carefully prepared learning environment. Children are free to move about the classroom, choosing activities that spark their interest. They may work with materials for as long as they wish, developing focus, perseverance, self-discipline, and coordination through repetition and meaningful engagement.

Our mixed-age classrooms support peer learning, while purposeful, hands-on materials invite deep exploration. Children develop a strong sense of belonging and responsibility as they contribute to the classroom community, often taking on age-appropriate tasks that foster independence and pride in their environment.

At Koru Montessori in Sunnynook, Auckland, we create an enriching space where children aged 2–6 can learn with joy, grow with confidence, and explore their world in a way that is deeply meaningful.

The Role of the Montessori Teacher

Rather than leading the group from the front of the room, Montessori teachers act as observers and guides, identifying each child’s unique learning style, interests, and capabilities. Through careful observation and respectful interaction, they offer children the right materials at the right time to extend their learning and confidence. As a result, children become self-motivated, independent learners who are genuinely engaged in their education.
